But after finally chosen field, thorough research of your prospects! Find out what jobs are available and what skills, training and education needed for this area. When planning a career, you need to explore and observe the workers of the field, to learn more about which activities lead to higher positions, who have jobs with more pay and responsibility, career planning, etc., you know what you're getting into before you begin your professional life!
Success is not necessarily reaching the top position on the field. Assume that if you are a programmer and loves programming, it will not be very happy, even if given the post of deputy IT, although this may be the highest position in the company's IT! It would be like saying "stepping into someone else's shoes!" Perhaps the choice of chief software engineer can be your greatest possible fulfillment as a programmer.
